Do you mean the 3 categories you have created for http://chess.blogs.mu/? This want be displaying in the category widget until you add those categories to a blog post.
Have you tried adding them to a blog post?

Yes, it is the three categories that is in the content page section. I have added in a test post and it still not displaying the categories & description. One more thing, the Recent Post is not working even when a widget is added to the sidebar.

Perhaps you have now fixed it?
I've checked your site chess.blogs.mu. I can see that you have two categories showing in your category widget. Uncategorized (which is on your Hello World post) and Chess opening on your test post. Both posts are showing in your recent post widget.
The other thing that could be happening is your web browser cache. That has caught me out so many times myself. Read this post to learn more about web browser cache.
Since your blog is a new blog you might be interested in reading my post about the difference between tags and categories. Only because if you do want to use both it is always easier to use them from the start.

I have typed in the category name and description and saved the same. On preview, the same did not appear on the Nelo homepage. Previously it worked but not now,
